Should I Repair My Own Garage Door?

Carmen on Feb-8-2008

This is the question that pops up in homeowners minds as soon as
they hear the tell tale noise of a spring breaking in the garage. Before answering that question lets look at some information that might be useful to have a better understanding.

First - A few common facts should be discussed about your garage door: The garage is a large moving object that weighs 200 pounds and up–This weight requires an extreme amount of torque in order to counter balance it.

Secondly - There are two redundant safety systems
in newer garages that prevent a child or the family pet from getting
crushed between this massive object and the floor. The first is a set
of optical sensors also known as “safety eyes”. When the signal is broken between the sensors, the door reverses. The second is a force adjustment which also causes a reversal of the door. If for some reason your door is not equipped with both of these you should consider replacing your door opener.

A set of torsion springs can be found above the door when it is in
the closed position. They have a tremendous amount of potential energy
built up in them. When your spring breaks, this energy is released in
the form of sound; which is why you hear a loud “bang” (for any physics
geeks that would like to know…)

There are a series of steps necessary in fixing your garage door it is not rocket science. If the person has the proper tools and have detailed reliable information, fixing their garage door springs can be  accomplished successfully. However, if the necessary tools are not available and proper manuals are not at hand it can be dangerous.
